What should I expect at an audition on Charlotte Ballet’s National Audition Tour?

Registration will begin roughly 45 minutes prior to the audition class for each age group. The audition will consist of an hour and a half ballet class, for which a non-refundable audition fee will be charged. The audition class is conducted like a master class; there will be no early cuts. The audition class will consist of barre, center, and pointe work for the women. Men should expect tours en l’air and allegro that includes beats and pirouettes.

How are the audition classes broken down?

The audition classes are broken down by age. The younger age group, and typically the first audition class, is for 11 – 15 year old dancers. The older class is for 16 – 22 year old dancers.

What if I/my dancer is 15 now, but will be 16 once the Summer Intensive starts? Which audition class should I take?

If you are on the 15/16 age cusp, please take the audition class of the 11 – 15 year old dancers. The judges have your birthdate and age on your audition forms, and will know that you will be 16 by the time the Summer Intensive begins. No matter what class, the judges will be able to place you in the appropriate level.

How much pointe training do I need to be accepted into the Summer Intensive?

At least one year of pointe training is required for all female dancers for acceptance into the Summer Intensive.

May I still audition if I have no previous pointe training?

Yes, you are welcome to attend the audition class, but you will not be accepted into the Summer Intensive. All female dancers, Level 1 – Level 4, are required to take daily pointe technique classes.

If I did not pre-register, what forms of payment are accepted on-site?

Payment via CREDIT CARD or CHECK are the ONLY ways to pay the audition fee on-site.

What should I wear to the audition?

Ladies should wear a solid colored leotard, pink ballet tights, and your hair secured in a bun or French twist. Please bring both your flat and pointe shoes. Class will begin in your flat shoes, so please have your pointe shoes ready once the class moves off the barre.

Men should wear black tights and a white fitted t-shirt or leotard with black or white ballet shoes.

What are the photo size requirements for the headshot and photo of the dancer in first arabesque if I register on-site?

Both photos must be a standard 4 x 6 inches. Please write your full name and audition location on the back of both photos.

Can parents watch the audition class?

No, parents are not allowed to observe the audition class.

When and how will I get my audition results?

Dancers will receive their audition results two to three weeks after the audition via email. Please make sure to list the email address you check most frequently on the audition form for the quickest response time! You will receive registration information at the time of acceptance.

Can I call and get my results over the phone?

No, audition results will not be discussed or given over the phone at any point in time after the audition.

Can I get personal feedback from my audition?

No, individual audition results/critiques will not be discussed at any point in time after the audition.

What are the level placements for the Summer Intensive?

Charlotte Ballet places dancers into Levels 1 through 4 that best match their technical ability, physical strength, and understanding of movement. The highest of the levels is level 4. Dancers are placed in levels before arriving for the Intensive; you will be notified of your level placement at the time of acceptance. Subsequent evaluation of all dancers will take place during their first week of classes.

What is the difference between the two session options?

Based on the level the dancer is placed in, you have the option to choose from two Summer Intensive session lengths (5 weeks or 4 weeks) to match your schedule and training needs. Dancers in levels 3 & 4 are required to participate in Session A (5 weeks). Dancers in levels 1 & 2 have the option of participating in Session A or B (5 weeks or 4 weeks). The Summer Intensive concludes with the Summer Repertory Performances for dancers on Saturday, July 27, 2019.

What if I pre-pay for the audition, but do not attend? Can I get a refund?

No refunds will be given for missed auditions, no matter the circumstances.

What if I can’t attend one of the auditions in part of the audition tour? How can I audition?

If you are unable to attend one of the auditions in part of the audition tour, you are welcome submit a video audition beginning January 2, 2019 through February 4, 2019. For more details, please check the Audition Tour Webpage. No in-person auditions will be accommodated for.

I have been accepted in Charlotte Ballet’s 2019 Summer Intensive. What is my next step?

If you are accepted into the program, you will receive an email with online registration instructions. Online registration is the only way to secure a spot in Charlotte Ballet’s Summer Intensive. Space is limited and we fill spaces on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please note, spaces may fill before the Friday, March 8, 2019 registration deadline. Dancers are therefore encouraged to complete the online registration forms with first payment as quickly as possible.

What do I do if I am interested in receiving a Scholarship or Financial Aid?

All merit-based scholarships are awarded to the dancer at the time of acceptance. Scholarships based off of both merit and financial need require a separate Financial Aid Application. After you/your dancer has auditioned and been accepted into the Summer Intensive, please contact Ruth Gibbs via email to receive this application. Please note no Financial Aid Applications will be sent to dancers or parents past February 28, 2019.

How do I indicate that I am interested in being considered for Charlotte Ballet’s Pre-Professional Division?

The Academy uses the Summer Intensive as a time to evaluate dancers for acceptance into our year-round training programs at the Trainee and Senior Trainee levels within the Pre-Professional Division. Dancers who wish to be considered for these programs are required to attend our Summer Intensive. For more information regarding Charlotte Ballet’s Pre-Professional Division, click here.

How many dancers are you able to accept in your Summer Intensive?

Our Summer Intensive program maxes out at roughly 100 dancers total. We do our best to keep the levels as even as possible, roughly 25 per level, but this does fluctuate each year dependent on the number of registrations that come in.

What are the dates for the 2019 Summer Intensive?

Session A (5 Weeks): June 24 – July 27, 2019

Session B (4 Weeks): July 1 – July 27, 2019

Final performances will be Saturday, July 27, 2019

For dancers coming to the Summer Intensive from out of town, what is the summer housing option?

Supervised Room and Board is available on the beautiful, 1,000-acre campus of the University Of North Carolina at Charlotte. Each day, students are shuttled from UNC Charlotte to the Center for Dance. Students may also participate in weekly chaperoned excursions around the Charlotte area. Dancers move in the Sunday before their session begins (June 23, 2019 for Session A; June 30, 2019 for Session B) and move out on Sunday, July 28, 2019.
